SUSHIL KUMAR Wins GOLD at Commonwealth Wrestling Championship - 2017
NEW DELHI: Double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar made a glorious return to the international arena by clinching a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday.

Sushil Kumar, returing to international wrestling after more than three years, secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday. Competing in the 74kg weight categotry, he defeated New Zealand Akash Khullar in the final to clinch the gold medal for India. The victory in the final was via a pinfall. India’s other wrestler in same category, Parveen Rana won a bronze medal.

Sushil retured to competitive wrestler in November at the Senior Nationals in Indore where he won a gold medal but that was amid controversy as he was given three walkovers from his fellow wrestlers. In the final in Indore, Rana also gave him a walkover but this time in South Africa, Sushil and Rana wrestled. Sushil came out on top 5-4 against Rana.

In his other matches, Sushil won by fall against Jasmit Singh Phulka of Canada, Johannes Petrus Botha of South Africa and on points against Rana.

“He wrestled very well and the good part in that he won the bouts by fall. As a coach I feel very good and positive about Sushil,” Vinod Kumar, coach of Sushil and who is in South Africa,
